Summary
Alternative energy systems are being developed for transit vehicles at an exciting rate. Associated with this is an industry push for more roof mounted options to integrate these systems.
Our Contribution
Set on this backdrop CADmech developed a “transition panel” to provide an aerodynamic surface between two such roof mounted systems. The panel needed to provide a smoother transition for air flow as well as an appealing appearance. Since tree branches often make direct contact with the top of this vehicle, the panel needed to be supported with a structural sub-frame weldment. The CADmech team worked with both the energy storage device supplier, ISE and the transportation OEM to achieve harmonious system integration.
The fiberglass panel was designed for ease of assembly and maintenance and involved several strategically placed panels that provided both access to attachment points and air flow to meet the cooling requirements for the energy storage unit.
