Summary

CADmech is extremely proud of the contribution it made to the International Space Station’s SPDM (Special Purpose Dextrous Manipulator). Launched in March 2008, the SPDM was a design effort conducted by the Canadian Space Agency in conjunction with its Mobile Base System (MBS) and Space Station Remote Manipulator Systems (SSRMS).

Our Contribution

This two arm robot is an essential tool for repairing and maintaining the International Space Station. It is designed to perform precise manipulation tasks on small exterior components that are handled by astronauts during spacewalks.

CADmech participated in several aspects of the program from the concept stage to final audit. CADmech developed the design for the SPDM body, Tooling system (Socket Extension Tool, Tool Holster and Tool Holder), part of ORU platform, Test Fixtures, Mate or De-mate Connector Mechanism and Shrouds. Our designers worked concurrently with structural, thermal, manufacturing and system integration groups to ensure that all program requirements were met. We created layouts followed by fully parametric solid model assemblies, component and interface drawings, all meeting stringent military standards and procedures.

A mark of excellence was delivered to CADmech through the receipt of the Technical Outstanding Achievement Award for designs in this innovative and challenging program.
