Summary
This project began with defining the task at hand: to design and prototype an automotive rim with a new and interesting look for a younger market. We began by exploring the current offerings in the industry and from there sketched a shortlist of design concepts.
Our Contribution
A direction was quickly defined and a detailed model was created using NX software. Industry standard loading conditions were used to verify the design through Finite Element analysis and this was followed by defining key dimensions and tolerances on manufacturing drawings. A photo-rendered image of the wheel on a vehicle was simulated to finalize the design long before any material was machined.
The new product was realized as a prototype using a combination of machined foam for the outer surface mounted to an aluminum body of an existing rim. Painted and finished, the prototype provided an accurate image of what the final product would look like. It was presented at an automotive conference and demonstrated the full range of capabilities the CADmech team can offer.
