Summary
Continuous innovation is a necessecity in the rapidly evolving world of drug discovery. One such innovation involved the development of a new source for an existing mass spectrometer. This new source was mainly characterized by larger heaters capable of generating temperatures much higher than previous generations of the product. CADmech’s primary role was to develop innovations related to protecting the user against accidental burn on the exposed surfaces of the heated body.
Our Contribution
As the project developed, the CADmech team completed a significant R&D effort related to heat dissipation. Using several different approaches to finding a final solution, concepts were created, prototyped and tested in order to verify the design.
The end result was an attractive urethane cover, resistant to impact and high temperatures yet still allows users to manipulate the source immediately upon instrument shut-off. To address heat issues in the latches we took the opportunity to create an easier un-latching mechanisms process that also reduced surface temperatures.
